Dealer Coating vs Gtechniq Ceramic Coating: What New-Car Buyers Should Know

Buying a new car usually comes with a long list of optional extras.

Window tint.

Interior protection.

Dash cameras.

Paint protection.

And somewhere along the way, you may be offered a ceramic coating or long-term paint-protection package before you've even driven the car out of the dealership.

It can sound impressive.

You might hear phrases such as:

  • Lifetime paint protection

  • 20-year warranty

  • Ceramic protection

  • No need to wax

  • Protection against bird droppings, UV and environmental damage

But there is a much more important question than the number printed on the warranty brochure:

What is actually being applied to your car, how is the paint being prepared, who is applying it, and who will look after you if something goes wrong?

At Elite Auto Care, we use Gtechniq professional ceramic coatings, so we wanted to explain some of the differences between a specialist-installed Gtechniq coating and the type of paint-protection packages commonly sold through new-car dealerships.

For simplicity, we'll refer to these throughout this article simply as "dealer coatings."

Not every dealer coating is the same

The first thing worth understanding is that "dealer coating" isn't one particular product.

Different dealership groups and vehicle manufacturers use different protection systems.

Some are genuine ceramic coatings.

Some are polymer-based paint-protection systems.

Some are products developed specifically for dealer aftermarket programs.

And some dealership groups even have close commercial relationships with the companies supplying those products.

That doesn't automatically make them good or bad.

But it does mean that the words paint protection and ceramic coating shouldn't automatically be treated as the same thing.

So what is Gtechniq?

Gtechniq is a specialist surface-protection company founded in the UK in 2001.

The company was built around developing coatings rather than simply creating products for dealership aftermarket sales.

Its professional coating range includes products such as:

Crystal Serum Light

and

Crystal Serum Ultra

Crystal Serum Ultra is Gtechniq's professional-only flagship ceramic coating and is only available through Gtechniq Accredited Detailers.

It forms a chemically bonded ceramic layer over the vehicle's clear coat and is designed to provide resistance against environmental contamination, chemicals, oxidation and light wash-induced marring.

When professionally installed and correctly maintained, Crystal Serum Ultra carries a nine-year guarantee.

But the number of years isn't the part we think matters most.

The important part is the system behind it.

Dealer coating versus specialist coating

When you buy paint protection through a dealership, it is normally sold as an aftermarket addition to the vehicle purchase.

The dealership's main business is selling cars.

Paint protection is an extra.

When you bring a vehicle to a professional detailer for ceramic coating, the ceramic coating is the job.

That creates a very different process.

At Elite Auto Care, we're looking at:

  • paint condition

  • contamination

  • transport marks

  • wash marks

  • swirl marks

  • sanding marks

  • machine-polishing defects

  • water spotting

  • previous repairs

  • clear-coat condition

before the coating bottle is even opened.

Because ceramic coating doesn't fix bad paint.

It protects what is underneath it.

A new car doesn't necessarily have new-looking paint

This catches a lot of people by surprise.

A vehicle can be brand new and still have paint defects.

Before reaching you, a new car may have been:

transported internationally,

stored outdoors,

transported again,

washed at a holding yard,

washed at the dealership,

machine polished,

covered in protective films,

handled by multiple people,

and exposed to industrial fallout and environmental contamination.

By the time you collect it, the odometer might show only a handful of kilometres.

The paint, however, may already have swirls, light scratches, contamination or polishing marks.

We've seen it plenty of times.

That is why paint preparation matters just as much as the coating itself.

The coating is the final step, not the first

A proper ceramic-coating job should begin with the paint.

At Elite Auto Care, a new-car coating normally involves:

Thorough wash

↓

Chemical decontamination

↓

Mechanical decontamination where required

↓

Paint inspection

↓

Machine paint correction

↓

Panel preparation

↓

Ceramic coating application

The coating comes last.

And that's important.

Because if a coating is simply applied over swirls, machine marks and contamination, you've essentially locked those defects underneath it.

A phrase we use a lot is:

Coating poor paint preparation simply gives you protected poor paint preparation.

What about the huge dealer warranties?

This is probably one of the most confusing parts for customers.

A dealer coating might advertise:

20 years

or even:

Lifetime warranty

while Gtechniq Crystal Serum Ultra is guaranteed for nine years.

It is very easy to assume:

20 years must be better than nine.

But warranties don't work like coating-performance ratings.

A warranty is a legal agreement covering particular failures under particular conditions.

It doesn't automatically tell you:

  • which coating is harder

  • which coating has better chemical resistance

  • which coating retains gloss better

  • which coating stays hydrophobic longer

  • which coating has stronger UV resistance

  • which product has more advanced chemistry

  • which vehicle received better paint preparation

Warranty length and coating performance are two completely different things.

A 20-year warranty is not the same thing as a scientific test proving that a coating remains at peak performance for 20 years.

What does independent testing tell us?

This is another area where marketing can become confusing.

Gtechniq has subjected its coatings and surface-protection products to extensive laboratory and accelerated-weathering testing.

Some Gtechniq products have also undergone independent accelerated-weathering comparisons measuring things such as gloss retention under simulated harsh environmental exposure.

That type of testing is more useful than simply spraying water onto a bonnet and showing impressive beading.

However, we think customers should be cautious whenever any coating company quotes testing results.

Ask:

Was it independently tested?

What was actually measured?

What test conditions were used?

Was it compared with another product?

Are the full results publicly available?

A coating surviving thousands of hours in an accelerated-weathering machine sounds impressive.

But without knowing the test conditions, it is difficult for the average customer to compare one marketing claim against another.

Hydrophobic doesn't automatically mean protected

Water beading looks great.

And it's one of the things customers immediately notice after a ceramic coating.

But water behaviour isn't the whole story.

A coating can still bead water while gradually losing other aspects of its performance.

Likewise, hydrophobic performance can temporarily fall away because the coating becomes contaminated.

That is why professional ceramic coatings need proper maintenance.

We don't sell Gtechniq by simply telling customers:

"Look how much the water beads."

We're looking at the overall protection system:

  • chemical resistance

  • environmental resistance

  • ease of cleaning

  • gloss

  • contamination resistance

  • surface slickness

  • long-term durability

  • maintenance

Who actually applies your coating?

This may be one of the biggest differences of all.

Gtechniq Crystal Serum Ultra isn't a retail coating that anyone can simply purchase and apply.

It is restricted to Gtechniq Accredited Detailers.

There is a reason for that.

A professional ceramic coating requires proper surface preparation, correct environmental

conditions and careful installation.

And once Crystal Serum Ultra has cured, removing it isn't as simple as wiping it back off.

The installer matters.

At Elite Auto Care, the person preparing the paint is also the person responsible for the finish before the coating goes on.

That creates accountability.

You know who worked on the car.

You know where it was done.

And if you have a question six months later, you're speaking directly with the business that coated it.

The Australian support behind your Gtechniq coating

Another important factor for us is what happens after the coating has been installed.

Gtechniq has an established Australian operation providing product distribution, technical support and warranty assistance within Australia.

So although Gtechniq began in the UK, Australian customers aren't simply relying on an overseas website if they have a warranty question.

There is Australian-based support behind the product.

And when the coating is installed through Elite Auto Care, you also have a local Australian business standing in front of you.

We're not disappearing once the car leaves.

If you have a maintenance question, you're dealing with us.

If something doesn't look right, you're dealing with us.

If the vehicle needs to be inspected, you're dealing with us.

And where a genuine product warranty issue needs to be escalated, we can work with the Australian Gtechniq network.

That local relationship matters.

Independent specialist versus dealership aftermarket

This is perhaps the simplest way to look at the difference.

A dealership paint-protection package exists within the dealership's aftermarket sales system.

The dealer may also be selling you:

finance,

insurance,

window tint,

interior protection,

dash cameras,

accessories,

service plans,

scratch-and-dent programs,

and paint protection.

There is nothing inherently wrong with that.

It's simply a different business model.

Elite Auto Care exists specifically to look after vehicle surfaces.

Paint correction, detailing and ceramic coating aren't an add-on to something else we sell.

They are what we do.

Why we chose Gtechniq

We didn't choose Gtechniq because it has the biggest warranty number.

We chose it because of the complete system behind the product.

Specialist coating development.

Professional-only products.

Extensive research and testing.

Accredited installers.

Australian support.

A recognised international brand.

And coatings that allow us to offer different levels of protection depending on the customer's needs.

But even the best coating in the world can only perform properly when the surface underneath it has been prepared correctly.

That's why our focus always starts with the paint.

Not the brochure.

Not the warranty number.

Not the water-beading video.

The paint.

Before buying any new-car paint protection, ask five questions

Before agreeing to any dealership or detailing protection package, ask:

1. What exact product is being applied?

Don't settle for "ceramic paint protection."

Ask for the actual product.

2. Who manufactures it?

Find out whether it is a specialist coating manufacturer or part of an aftermarket dealership program.

3. What paint preparation is included?

Does the package include paint inspection and machine correction, or simply cleaning before coating?

4. Who is applying it?

Ask what training or accreditation the installer has.

5. Who looks after you afterwards?

If you have a problem in two years, who do you call?

Those five answers will tell you far more than the warranty number printed across the front of the brochure.

The bottom line

Dealer coatings aren't automatically bad products.

Some are legitimate protection systems and some are backed by large automotive companies.

But buying paint protection through a dealership and having a professional ceramic coating installed by an independent specialist are not the same service.

With Elite Auto Care, you're choosing the detailer first.

We inspect your vehicle.

We prepare the paint.

We correct the paint where required.

We apply the coating.

We maintain it.

And we're here afterwards if you need us.

The Gtechniq coating is the protection on top.

The workmanship underneath it is what makes the difference.
